At our Dementia Service launch, Susan approached Age UK North Tyneside’s Senior Admiral Nurse to ask if she could visit to help support her in caring for her husband who had a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease. Our Admiral Nurse visited Susan and Peter and discussed some of the challenges they both faced.
Admiral Nurses provide practical support to those living with dementia
Susan was so pleased with the help she received from our Admiral Nurse that she wrote to Hilda Hayo, Chief Admiral Nurse and Chief Executive of Dementia UK (our partners) saying,
“Peter and I have had two sessions with the Admiral Nurse and I felt I must write to let you know how helpful and supportive I have found these meetings. Before and since Peter’s diagnosis, I have met with many support workers and although some of these sessions have seemed useful there is never any continuity and I find this extremely frustrating at the least.
“When the Admiral Nurse arrived she brought experience, understanding, common sense, humour and TIME which I appreciated more than words can say. As the Chief Admiral Nurse I wanted you to know how much she is valued and to express an earnest hope that more such nurses can be trained to offer support and hope to families like ours.”
Admiral Nurses build relationships with their customers
Susan has continued to meet with our Admiral Nurse on a regular basis to look for practical solutions to some of the daily challenges Peter’s dementia brings. Our Admiral Nurse has offered Susan the chance to talk about the changes in her relationship and home life due to dementia, whilst also helping her to navigate her way around other services such as daycare and respite.
Admiral Nurses offer time and understanding
Susan once again wrote to Hilda Hayo,
“Since last summer, the Admiral Nurse has been a tower of strength in supporting Peter and myself as we continue to struggle. She has taken time and some considerable effort to get to know us both and to help us in more ways than you can imagine.
“This week I am enjoying a respite break whilst Peter is in a marvellous dementia facility in Wallsend. On Monday when it was arranged for him to go, the Admiral Nurse persevered for more than an hour as she persuaded Peter to take what, for him, was a giant leap into the unknown. She spent at least five minutes sitting at the bottom of our stairs trying to help Peter fasten his shoelaces which were frustrating him.
“I am spreading the word about your organisation whenever I get the opportunity and hope and pray that Age UK North Tyneside’s Admiral Nurses receive the funding to continue their fantastic work and that more nurses can be found.
“Thank you for taking the time to read this. I mean every word from the bottom of my heart.”
Admiral Nurses offer ongoing support
As Peter’s dementia has brought more challenges for Susan, our Admiral Nurse has continued to offer support and advice. Peter has now moved into a care home and our Admiral Nurse is helping Susan to come to terms with the change to her life and Peter’s, and re-adjust to a new way of living.
Admiral Nurses provide emotional, practical and educational support to families who are supporting a person with dementia. Our service is available for families at any stage of the dementia journey who are facing challenges in caring for their relative or friend.

United Kingdom Carer’s Week 11-17 June 2018
Carer’s Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring. It highlights the challenges carers face and recognises the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK.
No one can underestimate the patience and sacrifice caring full time requires. That’s why it’s important to respect the work which carers do which often goes unnoticed. EveryDay respects the commitment given by carers and looks to support their role.
EveryDay adds support where families need this- an extension to the family almost. The campaign comes to life by thousands of individuals and organisations organising activities and events throughout the UK. We are drawing attention to just how important caring is.
Carer’s Week- Building Communities
This Carers Week, we’re coming together to build communities that support the health and wellbeing of carers. Around 6.5 million people in the UK are carers, looking after a parent, partner, child or friend. A carer is someone who provides unpaid care and support to a family member or friend who has a disability, illness, mental health problem or who needs extra help as they grow older.
Caring – the impact
Caring can be a hugely rewarding experience while sometimes carers find it challenging to take care of their own wellbeing whilst caring. The impact of caring on health and wellbeing should not be underestimated this Carer’s week.

Mrs B’s Care and her EveryDay Angels
Mrs B is 71 year old and lives alone in Wallsend and sadly took a fall at the end of December subsequently spending a month in hospital. When she was finally discharged in January the hospital, via her local authority put her in touch with EveryDay Care at Home initially to instigate a personal care service due to Mrs B’s lack of mobility.
Mrs B’s reduced confidence
Mrs B felt that not only was her mobility majorly reduced but her confidence had dropped significantly as a result of the fall. She was at this point unable to take care of herself and her independence was severely compromised as a result.
Mrs B and EveryDay Care
Mrs B initially required the EveryDay Care at Home team to undertake personal care as well as meal preparation and medication prompting.
The team still visits each day for 2 half hours providing support with meal making and domestic chores. Mrs B is now able to walk short distances and can prepare a cuppa again for herself.
These are only small steps but it has significantly improved her quality of life. Mrs B is now leaving her property with a friend and shopping or taking lunch which she feels has given her her life back again.
Mrs B is now looking to join Age UK North Tyneside’s Strength & Balance 12 week Falls programme.
| Mrs B describes her Personal Support Assistants as “my angels”.
She says “As I live alone the girls give me a real person to talk to every day, I don’t feel so alone now. I couldn’t have managed without them in the beginning. It’s an excellent service and I’d recommend anyone else who is struggling to get in touch. They give me advice and support when I need it and it’s a jolly, jolly good service” To access the EveryDay Care at Home Service https://everydayuk.org/contact/ Should you wish to assess your own support needs take a look at https://mycare.northtyneside.gov.uk/web/portal/pages/home

This is to provide an update on progress with procurement of a new urgent care service in North Tyneside, following last year’s engagement exercise and the earlier public consultation process.
The CCG has now completed a procurement process and Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust has been selected to operate the new service from 1 October 2018.
The new service will offer GP-led healthcare 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The new service will be based at North Tyneside General Hospital (Rake Lane), in line with the overall preference expressed by patients during the consultation process.
Patients will be able to book appointments 24/7 as well as having the option to walk in between 8am and midnight.
Urgent care services deal with minor injuries and minor ailments and are separate from A&E, which provides emergency care for life-threatening conditions.
These changes will integrate all urgent care services in one place. The new urgent treatment centre will be open from 8am to midnight every day of the week, with night-time appointments available by calling NHS 111. From 6.30pm to 8am, and 24/7 at weekends, there will also be a GP out of hours service, which will offer advice and help, including home visits.
This means patients will get the right care first time, as well as making better use of NHS resources.
It is one of a number of changes making it easier for patients to get the care they need. During the past year, the CCG has added hundreds of extra GP appointments every week in North Tyneside, including evenings and weekends.
In addition, the NHS 111 service is changing, with more clinicians available within the team and the ability to directly book GP appointments for patients if that is the most appropriate outcome of a call.
The CCG is calling on patients to ‘talk before you walk’ – by calling NHS 111 you can book an appointment, save yourself the hassle and help the NHS work more smoothly too.
The changes reflect the findings from the detailed consultation exercise, in which patients told us that urgent care services are confusing and they want something simple. In addition, following the recent engagement exercise, the CCG agreed to keep the walk-in service open until midnight, rather than 10pm as previously proposed.
These changes will replace the current urgent care centres at Battle Hill and North Tyneside General Hospital (Rake Lane). A&E services at the RVI (Royal Victoria Infirmary) and the Northumbria hospital are not affected by these changes.
Anyone with a medical emergency should dial 999 or attend A&E at the RVI in Newcastle or the Northumbria hospital in Cramlington. The Northumbria Hospital is for serious injuries and potentially life-threatening emergencies only, and any patients presenting with minor illnesses will be referred back to the urgent care service in North Tyneside or to a North Tyneside GP practice.
