EveryDay meets Jo Jingles!
Since August, EveryDay has been working in partnership with Jo Jingles, the UK’s largest provider of fun and interactive music, singing and movement sessions, within our Wellbeing Centres and Extra Care Schemes in North Tyneside.
The intergenerational musical sessions have been going down so well with our customers, the parents and the young ones! We spoke to Lindsay who runs the sessions to find out more.
Meet Lindsay and her Jo Jingles sessions…
Lindsay has been working at Jo Jingles for four years, after taking her own daughter to the classes from when she was only 4 months old. She was initially a Class Teacher and is now the Franchise Owner for the area.
“My favourite part of the job is meeting all the lovely people who come along to the classes” explained Lindsay, “I get to go to a wide variety of settings including nurseries, childminders and now your Wellbeing Centres”.
So what do the Jo Jingles intergenerational sessions involve?
The intergenerational sessions in our Wellbeing Centres are a little bit different from a normal Jo Jingles session as they are adapted for all of the different generations coming together. They run for 30 minutes and incorporate lots of traditional songs and nursery rhymes that the older generation will know from singing to their own children.
Lindsay described what the intergenerational sessions are like: “We play lots of instruments, use props like pompoms and ribbons, and of course, there’s always the old favourite of bubbles. Today we even used a giant scrunchie which connected everybody in the room together. At the end of the session, we have a chat over tea and biscuits all together and there’s obviously lots of cuddles from the little ones too”.
And what are the benefits of these intergenerational sessions?
“I think there’s benefits for everybody who comes along to these sessions. Obviously for the older generation, it’s a good chance for them to see babies and young children, especially as their grandchildren may be older now or they might not have family around them” revealed Lindsay, “It’s this idea of bringing community together, especially as these people wouldn’t normally come together as part of day to day life”.
There are also lots of movements involved in the sessions, such as big stretches with the instruments, gentle movements, clapping and waving. This means there is a focus on motor skills for all ages. The different songs sang in the session also may unlock memories for the older generation from when they were younger. For dementia patients especially, research has revealed that the power of music can kickstart the grey matter and reach parts of the damaged brain in ways other forms of communication cannot.
And how is everybody reacting to the intergenerational sessions?
Lindsay explained that “everyone is absolutely loving the sessions and everybody’s joining in. It’s something different for the customers”.
The parents and young children are also loving the sessions. Lindsay said there have been lots of positive comments and people are spreading the word about Jo Jingles at EveryDay Wellbeing Centres.
So how can you get involved?

KalmaBaby goes viral
BBC Look North visited our Cedar Grove Wellbeing Centre to see our customer’s interaction with their regular KalmaBaby yoga sessions delivered by Sarah Lawless .
Baby Yoga
Kalma Baby offers baby yoga, toddler yoga, junior yoga and baby developmental massage classes. Their sessions make development fun with unique benefits for young bodies and minds. The benefit to our customers within the wellbeing and extra care settings is obvious. Adults who experienced close intergenerational interaction are less prone to depression and have better physical health as they feel more active and productive. It prevents the isolation and loneliness of older adults.
10 Benefits to Intergenerational Relationships
Intergenerational bonding is good for all concerned, and also has many benefits starting from improving the immune system to enhancing social intelligence.
- It provides an opportunity for both to learn new skills.
- It gives the child and the older adult a sense of purpose.
- Helps children to understand and later accept their own aging.
- Engaging with children invigorates and energizes older adults.
- It prevents the isolation and loneliness of older adults.
- Intergenerational sharing helps in keeping family stories and history alive.
- It is an aid in cognitive stimulation as well as broadening social circles especially when the youth introduce technology into the life of older adults.
- It also improves mental health so that they can perform better on memory tests, and those with dementia also experience positive effects.
- It reduces feelings of sadness as these are experiences they enjoy and look forward to.
- It increases their self-worth and self-esteem along with improved performance.
Developing connections with a younger generation can help older adults feel a greater sense of fulfilment.

Pets, mental health & wellbeing
The companionship that a pet offers is a great way to reduce anxiety and stress. A pet can be a great source of comfort, companionship and motivation for their owners. In many ways, pets can help us to live mentally healthier lives.
Pets and depression
Pets are also a great motivator for people. Dogs especially are great at encouraging their owners to get exercise, and this can be beneficial for those suffering from depression. Pets can also have calming effects on their owner. Just by stroking, sitting next to or playing with a pet can give their owner a chance to relax and calm their mind. Caring for a pet also gives a person purpose and reward, and a sense of achievement. It also helps them feel valuable and needed.
Pets and socialising
Walking a dog often leads to conversations with other dog owners and this helps owners to stay socially connected and less withdrawn. People who have more social relationships and friendships tend to be mentally healthier.
Pets and loneliness
A pet is great companion. They give their owners company, a sense of security and someone to share the routine of the day with. Pets can be especially valuable company for those in later life and living alone.
Pets and people in later life
People in later life experiencing typical life stresses can be comforted by a companion pet. It is thought that a dog can be a stress buffer that softens the effects of adverse events on a person. With an animal in the home, people with Alzheimer’s are thought to have fewer anxious outbursts.
Pets as Wellbeing (PAW) and EveryDay Wellbeing Centres
We recognise all of the above benefits which pets can bring to the lives of older people but sadly not everyone in later life is able to keep their own pet. Our Wellbeing Centres in North Tyneside now offer our customers the opportunity to interact with Pets As Wellbeing (PAW) ambassadors and even take them for small walks within the enclosed gardens.

What is especially relevant to the sessions of Massage KalmaBaby teaches is how to help aid against common infant ailments, strengthen and stimulate muscles and also relax your child. In addition massage sessions also have a unique twist in which KalmaBaby teaches developmental techniques, as a result they help with sitting and standing.

5 star Yell.com Reviews
“Having recently moved into the area I was looking for continuity of care for my elderly Aunt who has dementia which can be challenging. After explaining this on the phone to Gary to my surprise he wasn’t phased and arranged an evening appointment for her in her own home. I cannot recommend Gary highly enough – an amazing job done with great kindness, consideration and patience shown. We have followed the advice he gave to her, the outcome being that she is much more comfortable now when walking. Excellent service – thank you”.
“We have used this service before but this time it was my turn. Made appointment to suit great! Gary arrived as agreed and began with medical update, then gave my feet a full check up before doing the required work. He explained the whole process and follow up care.
No problem in recommending to anyone who needs foot care at home”.

Wearing Purple and Growing Old Disgracefully
Katie is a regular customer at Cedar Grove Wellbeing Centre in Wallsend she is 67 years old this year and says “when I reached fifty I decided to wear purple and grow old disgracefully after reading a book about women reaching maturity”
Katie’s Own Story
Katie explains that several life events had coloured her thoughts on life and had taken her to dark places for many years. She found herself struggling to accept or come to terms with the long term results and the subsequent changes in her life. After long periods in hospital due to various illness and falls Katie’s family sought support and specialist care within Cedar Grove’s Wellbeing Centre in Wallsend.
Katie’s Situation
Katie found herself as a result of her prolonged hospital stay lacking in confidence, unable to remember things, with diminished social skills, an inability to focus and concentrate or do the things she’d managed historically like sewing, drawing, reading and writing.
Her Personal Support Assistant at Cedar Grove encouraged Katie to start to draw again, they began with simple landscape drawings and encouraged Katie to join in with the social groups who were making cards, baking and doing craft and sewing hobbies.
She admits that she “still has dark days, physically and mentally” where her mobility can be selective. Some days Katie struggles to walk unaided or rise from a chair but she sets herself small goals with the intention of a wish list. She hopes to book a cruise and dance freely one day.
Katie says “thank you to the Cedar Grove staff for making my life worth living once again”

Intergenerational Project engages young and older at EveryDay
We’re delighted to announce that EveryDay will be working in partnership with Jo Jingles, the UK’s largest provider of fun and interactive music, singing and movement sessions to deliver intergenerational sessions within two of our centres in North Tyneside.
Engaging all generations in song and movement.
Initially Jo Jingles will introduce it’s fun and educational music, singing and movement classes within Crossgates Extra Care Scheme and Cedar Grove Wellbeing Centre. Kerry Parker. Head of Professional Care Services said “we’re delighted and proud to welcome Jo Jingles to our customers. EveryDay as a care provider wants to be at the forefront of innovative new ways to reduce social isolation, loneliness and of course bring joy, happiness and a sense of wellbeing. Music provides positive mental stimulation for both young and older generations and we feel that our customer’s motor, communication, cognitive and social/emotional skills will benefit from this interaction with the young ones and their parents”
In recent year Jo Jingles has brought children and parents into care settings to provide intergenerational music and singing sessions. These activities help to generate a music centred environment enabling participants to feel part of the community in which they reside.
Research tell us
There is an abundance of research available supporting the claim that providing activities involving different age groups has significant health benefits for those involved. Growing older doesn’t necessarily mean having to lose an interest in activities enjoyed as a child and hearing music can often stimulate very strong and meaningful memories. For many young children, exposure and familiarity with the older generation may, for a variety of reasons, be infrequent or non-existent. The same applies to the older generation who may not have regular contact with their grandchildren or families for one reason or another.
EveryDay is working hard to support the #endlonelinessinnorthtyneside campaign by introducing more activities to engage older people. Loneliness is a bigger problem than simply an emotional experience. Research shows that loneliness and social isolation are harmful to health.
According to a study by the Red Cross in partnership with Co-op, more than nine million adults in the UK are often or always lonely. Research from the Office for National Statistics also found that about one in 20 people always or often felt lonely.
There are currently over 850, 000 people living with dementia in the UK. It is more vital than ever to find effective activities to enhance the quality of life of people who are living with dementia. This along with the suite of activities already in place for EveryDay customers looks to unlock memories and reach the parts of the brain which other forms of communication cannot reach.
The Jo Jingles sessions will begin at Crossgates Extra Care Scheme from August 6th and Cedar Grove Wellbeing Centre from August 14th.

MCST Supporting Those Living With Dementia
JD is a 71 year old gentleman with a mixed dementia diagnosis. He lives alone in a warden supported local authority bungalow receiving some support from his brother.
This short case study describes how MCST has enhanced his life.
Maintenance Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (MCST) & JD
JD attends EveryDay’s Cedar Grove wellbeing centre weekly, in addition to the men’s group once each month. Apart from this JD has minimal integration within the community and looks to his brother as his only support. Prior to this attendance JD was socially isolated and although he enjoyed his time at the centre it was felt he would be an ideal candidate for the MCST (Maintenance Cognitive Stimulation Therapy) program delivered by the specialist dementia team within Cedar Grove. This would help to promote stronger connections with his peers.
What Is Maintenance Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (MCST)?
MCST is a weekly 4 hour program carried out over several weeks designed to improve cognitive skills and memory in attendees as well as to promote social interaction. Each session follows a specific structure to help orientate, encourage conversation about current affairs, and explore a variety of topics. These sessions include art, local history, former professions and food, using creative methods for example baking, painting, sound, quizzes and discussion.
The initial MCST session had 6 attendees and focused on a ‘childhood’ and ‘life history’ as a tool to gain a greater insight into the individuals involved. Following this first session our dementia coordinator began to question whether JD was really the right candidate for the project. She had been generally unable to ascertain his verbal skills or cognitive function due to what appeared to be a lack of engagement and input from him.
As the program progressed JD’s confidence grew and he began to share snippets of his life and his fun sense of humor emerged. He would personally thank our coordinator at the end of each session telling her how much he had enjoyed it. He’d often recall information from previous sessions. JD would often be the first to volunteer a name or theme song.
Following the final session the coordinator evaluates each participant using the final DEM-QOL assessment (a tool designed to record quality of life/mood prior and post program).
JD shared with the coordinator that he had been a loner all of his life and that he had had reservations at first about joining the group. He advised her that taking part in the MCST program had shown him that others were living with similar issues as he was. He had found a new confidence to share often personal aspects of his life with the new ‘friends’ he had made. Specifically JD shared that he was currently suffering from a UTI and that he had confided in a fellow group member who it transpired also had a UTI. He advised her that he had found great reassurance knowing that he was not alone and that he could discuss possible causes and preventative measures for the future.
JD said “it’s made me open up more” “coming here has made a difference”
